Day Thirteen
I’ve held back on introductions for the past few days. There isn’t much to add and I’m still playing catch-up, but we’re getting there!
Today’s challenge is a fun one. We need to enter map coordinates (or just click on the map, very similar to GeoGuessr!) for the first answer here.
Question one
In the summer of 2013, a blog post from the newspaper Le Monde looks back on a concert held the previous evening.
Place on the map the location of the stage during this concert.
We know that we’re looking for a blog post posted by Le Monde. I made it simple and searched for Le Monde Blog Concert with the timeframe specified to 2013.
I made a slight mistake and misclicked on the timeframe, setting it from 1/1/2013 - 1/1/2015. Not too sure how I managed that! That mistake led me to this postabout the Tempo Latino festival in Vic-Fezensac.
Vic-Fezensac is a small little town in France with a population of 3,578. On the website I found the below ‘map’ that specifies the big arena as the main stage:
When I find the location on the map it seems to match up pretty well. The 50 meter radius of the selection covers the stage completely:
I updated the timeframe of the query and found this article about the Rio Loco festival held in Toulouse, France.
The website shows that the 2026 festival is being held at Prairie des Filtres in Toulouse. This is a city park. I double-checked and confirmed that the festival was held here in 2013 too.
I started at south of the park and moved up, and eventually found the answer right at the northmost point of the park:
Question two
A video shows the « Programme des concerts » (in French) of this festival, and one naturally finds a photograph of Jimmy Cliff used to announce it.
Who is the photographer behind this picture?
The linked article in the question was this one. This led me down a bit of a rabbithole until I went back and searched for Programme des concerts rio loco 2013 Jimmy Cliff. This gave me this youtube video that contains the below image of Jimmy Cliff:
This seems like a well shot, professional photo. Reverse-image searching it shows that it even appears on Jimmy Cliff’s official website. Opening that header image in a new tab has an interesting note in the full URL: [https://www.jimmycliff.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/25003_1393852837_JC_Colors_CreditTomSheehan_reducedx753.jpg]
There’s our answer! That’s today’s challenge sorted.
Conclusion
Neat challenge! I like to include when I make mistakes into my write-ups. Reading CTF Write-ups you’ll notice that the authors are usually right on the money. The write-ups give the illusion that they know exactly what to do right away. It’s very possible that this is the case - I’m no red-teamer so all I know is running nmap to start off with - but for beginners it often gives the feeling that hesitating or being unaware of the next steps you should take makes you look bad.
I hope that by including the mistakes that I make it shows write-ups aren’t always clear-cut and perfectly executed.
