Day Nine

Today was another fun one! It involved a bit of travel for me, but it was a lovely trip.

Here’s the challenge, so let’s get right into it!

Question one

This song is closely linked to a statue.
Before this statue was moved, what could it read, engraved on the pediment facing it?

You’ll have to listen to the snippet of the song on the site, but these are the lyrics that we really care about;

In Dublin’s fair city Where girls are so pretty It was there that I first met sweet Molly Malone She wheeled her wheelbarrow Through the streets broad and narrow Crying “cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh”

Beautiful. Anyway, the song is associated with a statue of Molly Malone. A quick search later and we can see that Molly has a wikipedia page where the statue can be seen fairly easily.

If you scroll down to the statue section of the wikipedia we can see pretty clearly that the Statue was originally on Grafton Street, but has since moved. It only moved about 100 meters away but to answer the question we need to check the original spot, and find an engraving on a pediment.

The statue was moved in 2014. Streetview does have a view from 2014, but this appears to be after the statue was moved. Thankfully there is also a Streetview image available from 2009: Add alt-text

We can clearly see the statue of Mary, and right above it (Also highlighted) is the engraving!

Conclusion

This will be updated soon, but I actually went to Dublin to visit the statue. Admittedly I was busy doing other things, so I didn’t actually see the answer. In fact I didn’t know what a pediment was until I looked it up. I probably could have seen the engraving if I looked up a bit, but unfortunately for me I spent my time looking at other statues (and just enjoying the city).

Lovely trip, lovely challenge. Onto day 10!
